I am so very thankful

Dear Judith,

I am writing to thank you for all you’ve done. I am so very thankful that my aunt got in touch with you, and urged us to try the Davis program. But I truly feel that it was your gentle and patient way that really helped make the program work for my son.

I took a few notes those first five days when you did the program. I would love to share them with anyone that may benefit, for I’m sure there are many other parents with children out there, that are going through what we did.

As you know my son is dyslexic with his trouble being reading, writing, and spelling, with the reading being our main concern. In September when we did the program he was struggling to get through 3 sentences of first to second grade material. Being that he is 10 years old and in the fourth grade , this was affecting his self- esteem.

When you started with him,  he was reading with his head suppoted by one hand , and he rubbed his eyes constantly as he tried to get through a sentence or two (I asked the eye doctor about this, and he said there was nothing to be done). I was never able to make him read for more than five minutes at a time, for it was obvious that it was literally painful for him. It was actually stressful for both of us,  as it took all I could give to just get him to sit straight in the chair and not fidget or slump. The entire process was exhausting for the two of us. And he wanted to read SO badly. He just couldn’t get past a word or two without stumbling. What frustrated me was that many times he was able to read the harder words , and would struggle on the two and three letter words (which we know understand to be trigger words).

Now since kindergarten he has done many scientifically based programs.

He has been taken out for resource room each year with minimal, and very slow progress.Actually what I found strange, was that when I was reading the reviews on Amazon.com for Ronald Davis’ book ‘The Gift of Dyslexia’, the reviewers that spoke against it were mostly educators who said it sounds bogus, and you should only go with scientifically based programs. We did that for a number of years, and my son gained more from the Davis program in five days than what he got over a few years. I chose to go by the testimonials of mothers that actually tried the program.

It trully is amazing.

Now I have to admit I was skeptical at first, actually even while you started to work with him. But what choice did we have? Basically the only program that we didn’t try yet was a $12,000 program that I knew of someone who did it with her child, and it was still not the complete answer to her child’s learning difficulties.

However within the first few hours of you working with him, I started to have hope.

I saw that my son was grasping the orientation concept you were explaining to him, even though I didn’t get it myself.  I guess you have to be dyslexic.

Here are the notes I took those five days that you worked with him:

Day 1 – Optimistic. Judith made him feel good about himself. Enjoyed clay modeling.

Day 2 –  Formed  the alphabet from clay. Closed his eyes and was able to recite them backwards! He missed two, and after being shown the alphabet board, he was able to say exactly which two he missed.

There was a new felt confidence. Did the koosh balls. He can aim and get them in the bins – a new sense of control.

Day 3 – Judith warned me about this. Started to apply his tools learnt with the Davis method to reading – by noon he was very frustrated, almost hated it, said it was stupid, he was very upset. Judith had him break for lunch, and then spoke to him gently and he agreed to go on. By 5:00 pm he was still going at it (since 8:00am)

he read for 15 minutes straight (he had never done this before) from a 5th grade level book. He felt so proud! He continued reading even after kids came home and where running around with the dog, he did not stop untill the end of the chapter. He stayed focused, did release on his own accord when he got stuck, and maybe most amazing – he did not rub his eyes once!

Day 4 – Yesterday had to sweep every third fouth word, today he went through two or three lines at a time without disorienting. Perhaps most amazing at 9:00 pm, after an entire day of working, we had a meeting in the home with the school transitional program director, the shool phsycologist, and his teacher. Judith presented the Davis program to them and then asked if he wouldn’t mind to read. She told him he absolutely didn’t have to , but he sait ok. He read with me sweeping the words, and even self corrected a few times. His fluency is better than yesterday.

Day 3,4,5 – Judith did handwriting with him. It improved each day.

So there are the five days, and I was moved to tears on each one.

So Judith, if anyone comes to you hesitating, as I was, please have them read this. Maybe this will help them give the gift of Davis to their child with the gift of dyslexia.

P.S. It is now 8 months since we’ve done the program with you. Do you remember what I clay modeled as my goal? It was me by the stove cooking , and my son by the kitchen table reading. Well that goal has been reached Thank G-d. I now don’t have to stand above him as he reads, and sometimes I do just as i modeled in clay, cook by the stove, and listen to what is to me the sound of music.

I thank G-d for having my aunt in Israel find you and send you to us.

As you know there are facilitators closer to us (in the States), but we chose to go with you for two reasons.

Firstly, you know both the hebrew and english language.

Secondly but more importantly, was that I saw on-line that you are a specialist (you teach others how to become facilitators), and I wanted the woman with the

experience. And we did not make a mistake. You were amazing, supportive and patient with Donny, and G-d should give you the strength to continue helping many others in the years to come.

Looking forward to see you anytime you visit the States.
