Dear Judith Schwarcz,
Twelve year-old Oz Shmuel came to the Alumim Boarding Home in September 2002, along with his two brothers. He started studying in the 5th grade in Usishkin School.
At first, Oz was self-absorbed, stooped, rarely spoke, lacked self-confidence and in general was a very sad child.
Moving to the boarding home and the new school and the process of acclimatizing and adapting were very difficult. Oz had gaps in his studies, problems with reading, writing and getting organized, and great difficulties in mastering the English language.
Throughout the year, Oz worked to catch up in mathematics (which he has managed to achieve, and is now at the same level as the rest of the class), strengthened his reading, practiced writing, and made progress in all areas. The most serious obstacle was the English language, although he practiced the letters and sounds (with a helper) throughout the year, he hardly managed to retain anything in memory.
Oz was frustrated. The new school year started, and he was already at the beginning of the 6th grade. The dilemma about how to study English was difficult and frustrating, and even the possibility of exempting Oz from English lessons was considered.
The school counselor, Ms. Yosefa Atzmon, contacted the Davis Institute, which agreed to take upon itself Oz’s studies, causing great excitement to us in the boarding home (although we did not expect a miracle).
Oz started the process at the Davis Institute with Ms. Mira, full of hope and cooperating all the time. The change arrived, and the English letters were no longer strange to him, and after about two weeks he remembered all the letters.
We are currently working on mastering reading and vocabulary, and it is hard to describe Oz’s anticipation of his next meeting with Mira, where he will show her his new achievements, and of course, make further progress.
We all hope Oz will be able to realize his dream and master the English language, and we are grateful for the supportive relationship with a very special place, the Davis Institute, that knows how to provide strength and knowledge in a special way to those in need.
Well done!
Sincerely,
Nehama Kasovich
